Outpost III: Rise of the Spetsnaz (2013) Plot:Back in the past an elite squad of hard as fuck Russian soldiers are looking for the "Outpost". They don't know much about it, unlike anyone who has already watched the first 2 films, which they couldn't as there were no DVDs in the 1940s.
After a quick Nazi killing spree they're captured and taken to the outpost to have dirty things done to them (backdoor probing probably, those sneaky Nazis) in an effort to create super soldiers. Human experiments that have already created undead monsters.
Windowlicker
Is it good:Its ok Everybody loves a prequel it gets rid of those nasty annoying things, like surprises. Part III is by far the weakest in the series however it isn't bad it does have great action/fight scenes. In fact The Russian captain Dolokhov (Bryan Larkin) turns out to be a decent action hero. As the producers mentioned one part of the film is just cage fighting against zombies.
Strasser (Michael McKell) puts in a good performance as the sleazy SS officer
Some nice touches of humor and references (like the captain America ref) The baby killer from Bavaria ---- great character.
Hulk Smash
Turdige:As an origin story its not great, there is a lot of talk from the Nazi SS officer but more explanation was made in Outpost II of what is actually happening, plus the move is further from the soldiers shifted out of the physical dimension of the first film to regular zombies action. The whole thing is basically a zombie escape film and the creepy atmosphere that made the first so good is lost.
There was a lot to work with but it was kind of ignored, like the Nazi soldiers contemplating that if it works on the Russians then they could be next, but nothing comes of it. Overall:The early Nazi Zombie ghost things were rubbish. Not a bad action movie though. As they say "Lets go slaughter some fucking Nazis"
Director: Kieran Parker Cast:: Bryan Larkin, Iván Kamarás, Michael McKell, Velibor Topic, Ben Lambert
Plot:Prosyntrex Pharmaceuticals have
a new drug Pro9 that needs testing.Luckily
there are always plenty of terminally skint people (like me) willing to risk
their health taking experimental drugs for the betterment of mankind....sorry
cash.
A miss match of stereotypes turn up including
students Adam (Aneurin Barnard) Carmen (Skye Lourie) & Arif (Amit Shah), tosser Jed (Oliver Coleman) & unemployedMorty (Steve Evets) there is also journalist Katie (Nia Roberts)
who is there undercover to see the desperation people will reach when Wonga is
not enough.
Drugs are bad
As we know drugs are bad and these have fuck nasty
side effects ranging from physical effects skin blisters & bleeding to paranoia
& madness.The horror that either
they will fall victim to the drug or those already effected
Is it all worth 2 grand (Hell Yeah!!)
Is it good: Yes; This very low budget horror/thriller gives a perfect view of the
group drug trial environment. Which won’t be good for a lot of people as its
mostly dull as fuck, full of getting to know you bullshit, the odd spattering of
wankers, smelly people and very occasionally a fit skint blonde student with
nice tits as in this film.
Confused
The acting is of a good standard, most have TV or
low budget film experience. Alex Reid (The Descent), the actress not the cross
dressing cage bummer, is probably the most high profile.
The setting,
a locked down clinic/lab, works well as when things go wrong it gives a feeling
of being trapped and isolated. Also the "Guinea
Pigs" seem more helpless in hospital gowns, like their identity has been
taken away and it’s almost justified that they can be used and thrown away because
they volunteered.
The Emo blonde is hot & naked for a very very
short amount of time (I rewound just to make sure for reporting purposes only of
course).
Fern cotton - make up free
Turdige: There isn’t that much character development making it slightly
difficult to get drawn into the fight for survival.
There is no music or score, which in low budget
films I prefer but a lot of people can’t deal with.
The main problem is the build up (or in other words
nothing happening) it’s far too long for a short film.
Overall: This
is how Casualty should be every week. A Decent
effort, low key but violent, atmospheric flick with enough gore and shocks to
keep people entertained.A kind of mini
locked down 28 days later (2002). If you prefer your films something like this
but with over the top gore & Eric Roberts go with Bloodwork (2012) instead
Director: Ian Clark Cast: Alex Reid, Steve Evets, Oliver
Coleman, Oliver Coleman, Aneurin Barnard and Chris Larkin
Plot:1940, the entire population of Friar,
New Hampshiremade a bizarre exodus, leaving behind all their
belongings.Soldiers are sent to find
them. They discover, frozen bodies and more disturbingly dismembered remains. The whole event is surrounded in mystery and
myth until declassified documents land in the hands of a group wanting to
follow the path and discover why???
The documents mention endless music & growing insecurity and madness
which they seem to dismiss even though a psychologist comes along to test their
sanity along the road.
Finding the start of the trail with help from the
only resident of the newly populated town willing to help they set out on a
journey into the realms of madness.
Napalm these fuckin munchkins
Is it good:Yes; another documentary style found footage horror? A lot of people do
not like them (So don’t watch gimpo) I love them & hate them in equal
measure but I can appreciate a good effort and this is one.
The films strength is its ability to capture its audience
in the hopelessness of the situation, that the explorers are believing, everything they had ridiculed at
the start and tried to deny on the trail is occurring and eventually accepting
the inevitability they will never escape. It is the key factor in these types of film working well in horror films
like room 1408 (2007) & Grave Encounters although YellowBrickRoad is not as good
as those it does bring across well the feeling of hopelessness.
The music sounded like 40s tunes mixed by JG
Thirlwell or NIN I kind of liked it.
Worst festival EVER
The film has nice touches like simple “have you
gone nuts yet” type deep pressure tests.
A very-very
bleak atmosphere is created, with some decent gore effects and brutal moments.
Also the attempts to control the growing primal
urge to kill is probably the best bit of acting, along with the bad berry trip.
Turdige:The acting isn’t great even for a $½million budget, most of the characters
are bland so you don’t really invest any time hoping for their survival. The final end....end... tried to be off the wall insanity but
just came across craptastic.
Happy Pills
Although the gore was good there wasn’t enough to
make the endless hide & seek scenes worthwhile.
Overall:Reminiscent
of the even simpler (and better) Blair Witch Project (1998).This trippy sometimes mind numbing horror has
a good simple premise some nasty gore scenes and is worth a try but the music
& the David Lynch ending may piss you off.
Director: Jesse Holland, Andy Mitton Cast: Cassidy Freeman, Anessa
Ramsey, Clark Freeman, Lee Wilkof.
Plot:Agnes (Ashley Judd) is a mess,
living in a scruffy motel, indulging in drink and drugs worried about her
abusive ex Jerry (Harry Connick Jr) who has just been released from prison.
Things aren’t exactly going well but they get a fuck load worse when she's introduced to Peter (Michael Shannon) a seemingly nice timid guy who makes
her feel wanted again. Giving all her
trust to him until he draws her into a Bug infested world of madness.
I found a fucking pube
Is it good:Yes, William Friedkin the legend behind the
Exorcist (1973) hasn’t had a mention in a while but he proves with Bug that he
can still get in your head. Not a
conventional horror more a drug induced sub Cronenberg flick.
Ashley Judd shows has always
been damn good, criminally underrated actress with nipples that could cut glass
& they make a much appreciated appearance. She is damaged and susceptible to abuse, agreeing
it’s her fault when her ex returns and beats her.Which could be a contributing factor to being
overcome by the errr bugginess of life.
That escalated quickly
It’s open to interpretation,
what it’s all about, whether he is a veteran that has been experimented on, or
just a schizophrenic with an infections personality, or as I think bug is just
a metaphor for & effect of the crack or meth they seem to be on.It would explain there deterioration, paranoia
and alienation from others while relying just on each other drawn into their
own world. I am probably completely
wrong but I’m happy not to know just like I never knew what the fuck Cronenberg
or Lynch were doing.
As with the Exorcist the claustrophobic intensity a single room film gives is what Friedkin does best. Also there is a nice touch of
gore mostly self inflicted.
De-bugged
Turdige: The doctor/whatever?? was bit of a weak
link not convincing as, well, anything. Not much else maybe could have done with a bit more blood & nipples
but that’s what rewind & freeze-frame were invented for.
Overall: Great acting and atmosphere for a
limited location film. Hot sweaty claustrophobic felt difficult to breathe just
watching it. An excellent descent into
madness film that really draws you in to the world of the mind fucked.
Director: William Friedkin Cast: Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon,
Harry Connick Jr, Lynn Collins, Brían F. O'Byrne
